Innovation is one of the most important elements that allow a country to develop a knowledge based economy. Innovations, whether simply improving an existing item or creating a whole new breakthrough, are vital to driving the economic development of a nation. Intel, together with Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) and Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), recently hosted a 3 day conference on an innovation process called TRIZ to help cultivate the innovation culture in Malaysia and to enable international collaboration on the topic.

TRIZ, an acronym that translates in English as “Theory of Inventive Problem Solving”, is a structured problem solving methodology that encourages systematic brainstorming. It encourages an innovative approach to problem solving that is more effective than traditional methods. “The method has more than a dozen tools which can be used to affect structured brainstorming. This helps break down the problem into small manageable parts, so that thinkers can come up with more elegant and less complex solutions” said Dr T.S. Yeoh, president of the Malaysia Triz Innovation Association and Intel Malaysia Principal Engineer.

The myTRIZ Conference 2010, themed “Generating Growth through Systematic Innovation”, was a key initiative of the Malaysia TRIZ Innovation Association (myTRIZ) that was formed early this year. The conference brought together an array of international TRIZ experts and end-users to share best practices and encourage the usage of TRIZ methodology in Malaysia.

The conference followed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Intel Malaysia and the MoHE and MDeC to incorporate the TRIZ methodology as part of the local undergraduate curriculum. Speaking about the MOU, Suresh Chandra, Site Human Resources Director, Intel Malaysia said that the MOU “demonstrates our continued commitment to the development of human capital through increasing innovation and creative skills among local graduates. Our objective is to enhance the curricula in universities to ensure graduates are equipped with not only industry relevant skills but also critical thinking and innovative problem solving skills.”

Atul Bhargava, Managing Director Intel Malaysia said, “We believe that TRIZ is able to enhance the curricula in universities to ensure graduates are equipped with industry relevant skills, such as critical thinking and innovative problem solving. Deploying TRIZ is our first step in making that impact and we believe it will be beneficial for all graduates.”
